Impact Beyond the Horizon: How Tony Torrez is Changing Lives with Desert Dogs

LAS CRUCESLAS CRUCES

When I sat down with Tony Torrez on April 3, 2026, I didn’t know what to expect. What I found was a masterclass in community investment. As a co-founder of New Mexico Desert Dogs LLC, Tony has turned a simple 2012 initiative into a powerhouse of social good that proves one thing: when you lead with heart, the scale follows.

From Small Trips to Massive Movements

Tony started over a decade ago with a straightforward mission: to take disadvantaged kids fishing, camping, and hunting. It was about getting them outdoors and away from their electronic devices.

Today, that mission has exploded.

In the world of logistics and planning, we usually talk about capacity limits. Not Tony. He told me about times they prepared for 100 kids only to have 200 show up. While some would see a hurdle, Tony sees an opportunity.

He does not pass on anyone. If a kid shows up, they participate. It is a philosophy that has made Desert Dogs the top feel-good group in New Mexico, an honor they earned back in 2018 and continue to live up to daily.

The Why Behind the Work

Tony is a Las Cruces native who balances a career at NASA with this full-time volunteer hustle.

So, why does he do it for free?

It really comes down to two things:

  1. Gratitude. He is paying back the kindness shown to his family when his daughter was sick years ago.

  2. Prevention. He wants to reach kids while they are young, providing a positive path before the wrong influences can take root.

His return on investment is not measured in dollars but in the smiles on the faces of those 18 and under and in the sight of them returning year after year.

Community Synergy in Action

Desert Dogs is not a solo act. Tony has built a network of support that includes eight volunteers, as well as heavy hitters like Walmart and the Road Runner Food Bank. But some of the most impactful work happens through local partnerships.

  • Public Service Bonds. They host annual events with the police and fire departments. This August, look out for a BBQ cook-off between the two organizations—a perfect example of community building through friendly competition.

  • Upcoming Events. Mark your calendars for June 6. That is the date for the annual fishing trip in Las Cruces, held in partnership with the local police.

  • Expansion: While Las Cruces is home, the impact extends to Dexter and beyond, fueled by word-of-mouth and support from Bravo Mic Radio.

Expanding the Field - Adding Rodeos to the Mission

When you look at the breadth of Tony’s work, it’s clear he isn’t afraid of a challenge. In addition to hunting and fishing trips, Tony also conducts rodeos. In the Southwest, rodeo culture is more than just a sport. It’s about heritage and discipline. By incorporating these events, he’s giving kids another avenue to build confidence and connect with New Mexico’s deep-rooted traditions.

Tony carries the same "everyone is welcome" mindset to the arena. Whether it’s a fishing pole or a saddle, the goal remains the same: provide a positive environment where kids can thrive. This addition to the New Mexico Desert Dogs portfolio only strengthens their status as a versatile, community-first organization.

More Than Just the Outdoors

While the 3rd annual fishing trip is a major focus right now, the scope of New Mexico Desert Dogs is broad. They are on the front lines with care packages, clothing drives, and gift cards for the homeless. Tony even integrates local traditions into a coyote-hunting group that features a community dinner before heading out.

Most of these events are entirely free or half-priced for the community. In a world where everything seems to have a price tag, Tony Torrez and the Desert Dogs are a reminder that the best investments we can make are in the people right next to us.

If you are looking for a way to give back or want to see community leadership in its purest form, keep an eye on what Tony is doing. He is not just running a 501 C3. Tony is building a legacy, one fishing trip at a time.
